GUIDING LIGHT Feature

Since the 1990s, Alan's (Ron Raines) family like Alexandra (Marj Dusay) and Phillip (Grant Aleksander) received the brunt of his machinations.

Spaulding Crimes And Misdemeanors

Attempted Murder
At Phillip and Blake's wedding in 1989, Alan threatened to blow up the church if Roger didn't reveal to the guests that he was alive. The men struggled and Alan pulled the trigger, but the bullet hit the groom. Alan took another shot at Roger, and this time got him. A few days later, Alan was hauled off to jail on two charges of attempted murder — ironically one of the few crimes for which Alan ever served time.

Blackmail
It's one of his specialties, blackmail that is. Where would Alan be without it? As early as 1982, Alan was using it to get what he wanted: He blackmailed wife Hope's maid to get her to quit. More recently, he blackmailed Lena to spy on Harley.

Conspiracy
For all of his talk about family values, Alan doesn't live by them. To wit, he conspired with Gary Swanson to set Phillip up for the murder of Neil in 1990.

Drugs
No, Alan isn't an addict, but he does use these substances to get what he wants. In 1983, he drugged Ross and planted cocaine in his car in order to ruin Marler's political career.

Embezzlement
Alan has a knack for money, especially when it's not his. In 1995, when Alan-Michael was president of Spaulding Enterprises, Alan hired Brent to do a little under-the-table money transferring.

Framed
Speaking of embezzlement, that's exactly how he framed Ross, this time in 1994, when Alan hired someone to impersonate Ross and withdraw funds from Spaulding Enterprises.

Greased The Palms
Bribing someone to get what he wants is as natural as breathing to Alan. For instance, he bribed court officials to wreak havoc on Beth's family in 1983. He again caused trouble for Beth when he paid Professor Blackburn to kidnap her in 1986. One of his most famous bribes — paying off Reva to say she was still married to Billy — was what introduced her to viewers in 1984.

Harbored Fugitives
If you're on the lam, Alan is the person you want on your side. Among the fugitives who he has helped are Roger Thorpe (1979), Christine Valere (1987) and Annie Dutton (1997).

Illegal Adoption
Back in the 1960s, Jackie Marler gave birth to a healthy baby boy whom she planned to put up for adoption. At the same time, Elizabeth Spaulding had a stillborn son, but before she could wake from the anesthesia, Alan paid a doctor lots of dough to switch the babies and let the Spauldings raise little Phillip as their own flesh and blood.

Juvenile Delinquency
Well, not Alan's, although we're sure he had plenty of that. In 2002, he hired a private investigator to get Gus's juvenile record, which caused major problems for Aitoro. (As a youngster, he had taken the rap for a murder he didn't commit to save his sister.)

Kidnapping
While Alan has been on both sides of a kidnapping, he's most often the one holding the cards and pulling the strings. One of his most notable escapades was in 1994 and involved Alexandra, Vanessa and Blake, whom he all held hostage on his yacht until they signed over Spaulding shares to him. Alan must hold a special place in his heart for Alex because he kidnapped her again, this time in 2002, in an attempt to win back the Spaulding presidency.
